Territoriality Report
A recent report by the Joseph Rowntree Foundation entitled Young people and territoriality in British Cities identifies the impact the psychological geographies of territoriality on young people's use of space, and how this constrains personal mobility and limits access to social and cultural opportunities (p.4). The report suggests that a better understanding of the impact of territoriality could inform the development of strategies to break down postcode boundaries and address the social isolation and exclusion felt by many young people.
Using a range of sources, including territorial maps drawn by young people of different ages, the report highlights the the nature of territorial cultures for young people and considers the young people’s motivations for being involved in territorial behaviour.
A PDF of the report is available to download free from the Joseph Rowntree Foundation website.
